The cost of a staged interconnect: a 60 MW reference campus
A reference campus receives 60 MW in two 30 MW tranches. If second-phase GPUs arrive three months before second-phase power, the idle hardware loses about $60M of its useful life.
| Allocation | 2 × 30 MW tranches |
|---|---|
| IT per phase | 24 MW at PUE 1.25 |
| GPUs per phase | 13,248 (184 racks × 72) |
| Compute capital per phase | $720M at $30M/MW |
| Life consumed while idle | ~$60M over 3 months |
Each 30 MW tranche supports 24 MW of IT load at a design PUE of 1.25: 184 racks at 130 kW, or 13,248 accelerators at 72 per rack. At $30M of compute capital per MW, each phase carries about $720M of hardware.
On a 36-month useful life, that hardware consumes about $20M of value per month whether or not it is powered. A three-month gap between delivery and energization costs roughly $60M. Grid sequences procurement against the energization schedule so the gap is planned out before the purchase order is signed.

Why power-first planning matters: the largest avoidable cost in a staged build is not energy, it is idle compute.
